Morgan ‘Big Chief ‘ Fitch is a rising prospect who appears to have all the necessary ingredients to eventually break through to the top of the middleweight division. Yet Morgan, who turned professional in 2010, at the relatively late age of 27, isn’t in any hurry. It happens too often in boxing that a talented fighter gets pushed along too hard and too fast, and there can be a hefty price to pay for that. Fitch wants to take his time and move up in class as, and when, he is ready.
When I talked to Fitch he told me a few of his favourite boxers are James ‘Lights Out’ Toney, Sugar Ray Leonard, and ‘The Greatest’ Muhammad Ali.
Despite an undefeated professional record of (16-0-1, 7koes), Fitch has already tasted adversity as a fighter. As an amateur, who eventually had 60 amateur fights, Fitch came back from a number of one-sided defeats to win two state titles.

As a professional, to say that Fitch was ‘thrown right into the wolves’ would be an understatement, as he fought the tough and dangerous Darnell Boone in just his 12th pro fight (the same Boone who in 2010 stopped current WBC world light-heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson.) What a scrap it was! Morgan rose from two knockdowns to work his way back with grit and determination, to seize a 6-rounds draw.
The ‘Big Chief’ who hails from Pittsburgh, PA, is originally from Louisiana, and came up to ’The Steel City’ 10 years ago, and hooked up with trainer Tommy Yankello, who is nourishing Fitch with his immense knowledge. Yankello trained former Lightweight champion ’The Pittsburgh Kid’ Paul Spadafora, Roy Jones Jr., and former heavyweight contender, Calvin Brock, amongst others.

When I spoke to Fitch he told me that he had sparred with future first ballot hall of fame member, Roy Jones Jr., and experience such as this, has allowed him to develop a very well-rounded technical tool box as a boxer. Fitch also carries better punching power than his record so far indicates.
Fitch gained his nickname of ’Big Chief’ due to his roots as part of the Houmas Indian tribe, and is very proud of his Native American heritage. In addition to gracefully being part of the Houmas Indian tribe, Fitch represents all Native American’s when he steps inside those ropes.

"Losing is not an option!"
The Middleweight division is currently in a muddle, with talks between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin continually on and off, and the rest of the division’s contenders are certainly not the best that the division has ever seen.
Morgan has an upcoming bout on June 18th, at the Meadows Casino, in Washington, PA, against Victor Kpadenou. Right now ’The Big Chief ‘ will keep climbing the ladder, and stick to his motto, that declares: “Losing is not an option!”

Pittsburgh's Morgan 'Big Chief' Fitch looked good against an over-matched opponent this past Saturday. I'd like to see him get on maybe a Televised undercard.
